(UPDATE: The deadline to register as an interverer has not been set yet)
On December 20, 2024 YEC and AEY (ATCO Electric Yukon)filed an application to update their Terms and Conditions of Service (T&Cs).
If you as a member of the public would like to be involved, you can be an “intervener” in the hearing – and ask questions of ATCO (AEY) and YEC and give your opinions and suggestions. You’ll have to register as an intervener by (sometime in Jan?, TBA) Jan 3, 2025 by writing a short note (as a pdf file) to the Yukon Utilities Board stating why you want to be involved and what you can offer.
This particular hearing is only on the T&Cs, so not the moment to complain about rates.
However, it might be the appropriate proceeding to point out that the billing statements do not give the actual the cost per kWh or the monthly customer charge. Actual rates change all of the time but this information is hidden in the riders – which change quite frequently. Did you know there was an 11% price hike in October 2024? Wouldn’t it be nice, if in addition to the riders we were shown actual rates (the end results of ever changing riders) on the billing statement?
This is also an appropriate proceeding to comment on issues with estimated billings and really anything mentioned in the document linked below – what YEC and ATCO (AEY) have submitted to the Yukon Utilities Board. The PDF file showing what they want to do and want to change can be downloaded here:
AEY-YEC Terms & Conditions of Service Application
As an intervener in this hearing, you will be able to ask relevant written questions of ATCO and YEC that they are required to answer, and you can present evidence in support of what you want changed in the T&Cs. In the end, you will submit your written argument – explaining to the Yukon Utilities Board what the utilities should do and why.
While this does seem like a lot of work, if enough people are involved, perhaps a difference can be made.
Also, your time isn’t free – and at the conclusion of the process you can fill out a cost sheet asking for reimbursement for the hours of work you have put in. Interestingly, the utilities also put in cost sheets and charge us for presenting their side of the story.
In personal experience as an intervener…. my opinion here… We need more interveners and we need to get the press involved also. The Utilities Board (in my opinion) is far more responsive to YEC and ATCO than to customers, because we don’t have enough people paying attention. Let’s change this!
Don’t just complain on a FB page, try to do something about it!
